Tilly Bagshawe: Angel of the Dark. "Sidney Sheldon" (3rd) |
Jessica Fletcher and Donald Bain: Trouble at High Tide. "Murder, She Wrote" (37th) |
David Baldacci: The Innocent. |
Josh Bazell: Wild Thing. Pietro Brnwna/Peter Brown (2nd) |
Alex Berenson: The Shadow Patrol. John Wells (6th) |
Cara Black: Murder at the Lanterne Rouge. Aimée Leduc (12th) One of the better crime novels in this long-running series, it is very complicated plot-wise yet thoughtfully constructed, a mystery that requires some patience on the part of the reader due to all that is going on, but one that is ultimately quite rewarding in the end. |
Rhys Bowen: Hush Now, Don't You Cry. Molly Murphy (11th) |
C. J. Box: Force of Nature. Joe Pickett (12th) |
Rita Mae Brown: The Big Cat Nap. Mrs. Murphy (20th) |
Mary Higgins Clark: The Lost Years. |
Harlan Coben: Stay Close. |
Robert Crais: Taken. Elvis Cole (12th) |
Deborah Crombie: No Mark Upon Her. Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James (14th) |
Joanne Fluke: Cinnamon Roll Murder. Hannah Swensen (15th) The murder mystery plot in the latest installment of this long-running series is a bit weak, though does hold some interest for the reader. Not so much Hannah's very busy personal life. The best part may be the included recipes, which will no doubt tempt readers into trying some on their own. |
Vince Flynn: Kill Shot. Mitch Rapp (12th) This sequel to the prequel to the series starts strong but then settles into a long stretch — indeed, most of the rest of the book — where very little of consequence or substance happens. It almost seems as if the book, with its relatively narrow focus, was written with a future adapted screenplay in mind. |
Lisa Gardner: Catch Me. D. D. Warren (4th) |
Paul Garrison: The Janson Command. Paul Janson (2nd) |
John Grisham: Calico Joe. |
Robert Harris: The Fear Index. Some elements of this financial thriller work far better than others. The helpless fear the main character feels is well developed, but the storyline is so weak that it fails to generate any real suspense. A perfectly adequate book for that lost afternoon, though not nearly as clever as it purports to be. |
Carolyn Hart: Death Comes Silently. "Death on Demand" (22nd) |
Joan Hess: Deader Homes and Gardens. Claire Malloy (18th) |
J. A. Jance: Left for Dead. Ali Reynolds (5th) There's much to like about this novel, including a strong cast of supporting characters in well-written, if somewhat thinly developed, storylines. But for series readers, don't expect much in the way of Ali Reynolds solving a whodunit-style mystery. |
Iris Johansen: What Doesn't Kill You. Catherine Ling (2nd) |
Jonathan Kellerman: Victims. Alex Delaware (27th) |
Donna Leon: Beastly Things. |
Elmore Leonard: Raylan. Raylan Givens |
Phillip Margolin: Capitol Murder. Dana Cutler (3rd) |
Charles Martin: Thunder and Rain. |
Michael Palmer: Oath of Office. |
James Patterson and Mark Sullivan: Private Games. Jack Morgan, Private (3rd) |
James Patterson and David Ellis: Guilty Wives. |
Richard North Patterson: Fall from Grace. |
Anne Perry: Dorchester Terrace. Thomas Pitt (28th) |
Thomas Perry: Poison Flower. Jane Whitefield (7th) Jane's talent for making people disappear hits a snag when she's taken prisoner herself and held, not for ransom, but for auction to the highest bidder, in this fast-paced thriller, the final third of which is particularly dramatic as she sets into motion her plans to capture her former captors. |
J. D. Robb: Celebrity in Death. Eve Dallas, "In Death" (33rd) |
Peter Robinson: Before the Poison. |
David Rosenfelt: Heart of a Killer. The two primary storylines in this stand-alone are both interesting and exciting, but almost too much for one book. Couple these with a large cast of characters and it can be overwhelming at times. Still, there is much to enjoy in this twist-filled thriller. |
Ann B. Ross: Miss Julia to the Rescue. |
Alexander McCall Smith: The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection. |
Dana Stabenow: Restless in the Grave. Kate Shugak (20th) |
Olen Steinhauer: An American Spy. Milo Weaver (3rd) |
Brad Taylor: All Necessary Force. Pike Logan (2nd) |
James Thompson: Helsinki White. Kari Vaara (3rd) |
Joseph Wambaugh: Harbor Nocturne. |
Kate White: So Pretty It Hurts. Bailey Weggins (6th) |
Randy Wayne White: Chasing Midnight. Doc Ford (19th) |
Jacqueline Winspear: Elegy for Eddie. Maisie Dobbs (9th) |
Stuart Woods: Unnatural Acts. |
